This was great. Not too straightforward, and I was already thinking when he grabbed the branch that “yay, this is going to have an upbeat end—” and never mind. Instant sub. Thanks for sharing!
Dude this is great. Something in this story or the way you write resonates with me - maybe bringing me back to my late teenage years (particularly something about being a young man on the cusp of…something) and feeling like I was so adult and could conquer the world. I’m not sure, but you’ve really captured something here. I’m excited to read more of your work.
Wow, thanks man! To tell the truth, this story was kinda triggered by my youngest son (adult now). Not that he was particularly resigned, or I was any better at his age, but still, the thought that originated with him mutated into one that a lot of people just "float" through their lives stuck with me. I immediately sat down to write this when I came back home, then submitted to a magazine and forgot about it for months until the rejection came a couple of weeks back 😅
Too often we find ourselves drifting through life without clear purpose, letting the current carry us along. Too complacent or comfortable to make the effort to choose a different course. I really enjoyed this story!

Thanks a lot! It means a lot when your writing touches someone.

Thank you!
A bit surreal and can be read in many ways. Perfect.
Thanks a lot! My goal was for reader to recognize people in there or even themselves.
Beautiful story! Great work!
Thanks man!
